Without further delay, this is the ultimate guide to AliExpress dropshipping.

The Ultimate Guide to Dropshipping

If you’re looking to become an ecommerce entrepreneur, dropshipping is the easiest way for to start your online business. As you do your research you’ll likely come across  AliExpress dropshipping, in particular, and for a few good reasons:

  • It doesn’t require much capital. In fact, I wrote a guide on how to start an ecommerce business with $0.00.
  • You don’t need a physical store. Since we’re talking about ecommerce here, you can run a successful AliExpress dropshipping business from anywhere in the world. With dropshipping, you also don’t even have to stock any of the inventory yourself.
  • Everything you need to learn is available for free online. You can use the vast number of articles, videos, and other educational material to learn on the go and achieve ecommerce success.

AliExpress Dropshipping: Why You Should Try It

Let’s say you’ve decided you want to start an ecommerce store. What are your next steps? Most entrepreneurs try to come up with a product idea, look for suppliers, pay for the products and get them into your real-world store. Then, once you receive your merchandise, you’ll try hard to sell them.

The problem is you don’t really know what will sell well or if you will be able to sell the product at all. There’s a lot of risk involved in this traditional business model.

Here’s an example:

  • Elena buys 100 units of a particular product line, paying $1,000 for them.
  • She only sells 10 products and brings in $200 in sales.
  • Elena quickly realizes that nobody likes her products and decides to close her store.
  • She experiences a loss of over $800.

In the above scenario, Elena invested $1,000 to open her store, but quickly realized the product line she decided to sell is not popular or at least that she simply doesn’t know where to find the right people who would be interested in that product. She only makes $200 in sales and is forced to close her store with an $800 loss.

Alternatively, if she had tried dropshipping, she would have made $100 in profit in spite of failing to pick the right products at first. Here’s an illustration of this scenario:

  • Elena uses dropshipping, so she doesn’t buy products in advance;
  • She only manages to sell 10 products and brings in $200 in sales;
  • Elena orders the products from her suppliers and has them shipped directly to her customers;
  • She quickly realize that nobody likes these products and decides to try a different niche or product instead;
  • Elena is still happy because she just made $100 in profit.

That’s how two very similar situations can bring very different results, with the key difference being dropshipping. Of course, if everything went well, she would have made $1,000 in profit in the first scenario. But don’t forget that people often overestimate their ability to create a successful ecommerce business, especially if it’s their first time. If you believe in numbers, more than 50% of Shopify store-owners never receive a single order at all.

So here’s the beauty of dropshipping. You don’t have to buy a product before selling it, so you don’t spend your precious budget on stocking inventory.

You don’t even have to take our word for it that this system really works at little risk to you. You can read more about ecommerce entrepreneurs who use AliExpress dropshipping successfully here: The Huffington Post, The Next Web, Forbes.

How to Dropship With Aliexpress

AliExpress dropshipping is one of the most popular marketplaces for ecommerce entrepreneurs using the dropshipping business model. You can import the product content and images from directly to your store, choosing from millions of different items right at your fingertips. You’ll also have the freedom to set your prices and markups. The best part is that after you sell a product, you purchase it from a supplier on AliExpress and then have it shipped directly from their warehouse to your customer. AliExpress dropshipping is simple, easy, and low risk for new ecommerce entrepreneurs.

While we’ve already covered many of the benefits of dropshipping with AliExpress, this process can still be a bit difficult to grasp. So, before we go on, let’s explore how it works step by step. To utilize AliExpress dropshipping, first you’ll set up your online store using a platform such a Shopify. One you have your store set up, you’re ready to start importing products from the AliExpress Marketplace. Using an app like Oberlo can help streamline and sync your imports from AliExpress with your Shopify storefront by notifying you of any inventory or price changes from your supplier, and it can aid you in sending tracking codes to your customers once their orders have been dispatched. When a customer places an order with your store, you’ll then go to your supplier and order that exact same item to be shipped directly to them. The infographic below offers a good visual representation of how AliExpress dropshipping works.

FAQs About Aliexpress Dropshipping

Now that this dropshipping guide has helped you understand the basics of AliExpress dropshipping, you might still have unanswered questions. After all, dropshipping isn’t a traditional way of doing ecommerce, and there are additional steps involved in the process.

I work at Oberlo, a software app that helps ecommerce entrepreneurs automate their AliExpress dropshipping businesses. We receive hundreds of questions from budding ecommerce entrepreneurs every day. Here are the three most frequently asked questions we receive, along with the answers.

For a full list, check out this article.

Will My Customers Know If the Products Are Dropshipped From Aliexpress?

Unlike other marketplaces (Amazon, eBay, Etsy), AliExpress has a very unique infrastructure that is most conducive to dropshipping. I’ve talked with dozens of suppliers using AliExpress. They all dropship, so you’ll find many suppliers who are reliable and familiar with this business model and their role in it.

Oberlo users ship around 2.1 million orders and thousands of new merchants sign up with us every month, demonstrating the growing popularity and feasibility of dropshipping. While it can be a leap of faith to put your order fulfillment in the hands of suppliers, rest assured that there are rarely any promotions or invoices in the packages your customers receive. You can even tell your supplier not to include any of these materials to be on the safe side. In addition, you can even arrange for custom packaging and the AliExpress premium shipping known as ePacket. Do keep in mind that the packages your customer receives will have Chinese shipping labels.

Why Should Someone Buy From Me If They Can Buy the Same Product From Aliexpress Cheaper?

This is an easy one: because you’re better! You might be a superior marketer who reaches potential customers first. Also, you might create a more trustworthy brand that people feel safer buying from. In addition, you may also provide extra services or content that builds a relationship with your customer. Remember that the concept of merchants buying products from suppliers for lower prices and stocking them in their stores long predates dropshipping itself. Most stores in your own community likely do the same.

Regarding dropshipping, choose your battles wisely. There are strategies that are more likely to set you apart from competition than others. For one, don’t try to compete on price you will never be the cheapest. Especially with lower-priced products (<$100), the price is not the determining factor at all.

Look at the same product on several popular websites such as,, DHgate, and AliExpress. These companies are all multi-million dollar businesses. Are these companies price competitive? No. Are they out of business? No! Instead, focus on you marketing strategies and building an awesome brand.

Aliexpress Shipping Takes Too Long, My Customers Won’t Wait. What Can I Do About It?

That’s just an assumption on your part, and I strongly suggest you test it. You’ll find that many customers are fine with waiting as long as you make the shipping times apparent on your site so that they know what to expect. While as mentioned above, you shouldn’t look to compete in terms of pricing, it is likely that you’ll be able to offer a customers a pretty good deal on products sourced from AliExpress dropshipping even with a markup. People are willing to wait if it means attaining a discount.

Alibaba made over $17.7 billion in sales in one day. Customers of other businesses listed in the price comparison example don’t seem to be concerned with long delivery terms either.

As an ecommerce entrepreneur, your task is to establish clear expectations, define your shipping policy, and display it in the relevant areas of your online store. Seeing that information, some people might leave your site, but you’ll be surprised how many people really don’t care about that.

Another way to mitigate any distaste among customers over long shipping times is to offer free shipping on all of your products. Often, this alone will indicate to them that it’ll likely take a little longer to receive their product. You can account for the shipping costs in your product markups.

Moreover, with the AliExpress premium shipping ePacket delivery option, it takes only 7-14 days for most shipments to reach the US, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and multiple other countries with bustling economies. We strongly recommend opting for ePacket whenever possible. It’s the perfect shipping option to help you achieve ecommerce success and higher customer satisfaction when you’re dropshipping from AliExpress!

How to Select Trustworthy Aliexpress Suppliers

With AliExpress dropshipping, you can easily lose control over the customer experience because you never see the product since it’s shipped directly from your supplier’s warehouse to your customer.

If you’re trying to provide top-notch customer service, which is a must, dropshipping could become a liability. Although AliExpress as a marketplace handles improper suppliers as best as it can, we still suggest being very careful when selecting your dropshipping suppliers.

Here are some top tips from our dropshipping guide on how to select the best suppliers:

Don’t Always Go for the Lowest Price

Here’s an example of how the AliExpress dropshipping marketplace works:

A supplier called Original Hoodies starts selling a high-quality product named “blue hoodie” at $40. Then, another supplier named Competitive Hoodies manufactures the same hoodie but reduces its price to $15 by adding more polyester instead of cotton.

When a merchant such as yourself searches for a blue hoodie, he sees two that look the same, but one is selling for a lower price. In most cases, the merchant will pick the cheaper one. The first supplier, Original Hoodies, becomes unhappy with her sales and also replaces her “blue hoodie” cotton materials with polyester and reduces the price to stay competitive.

While opting for the lowest priced product might seem like the obvious choice, it’s key to remember that this kind of competition can cause the quality of marketplace products to go down. Suppliers try to be price competitive, and each product usually has a number of very similar variations, often at artificially reduced prices.

In short, the price on goes down with the quality. If you’re trying to create a successful ecommerce business, then you’ll need to research and compare the prices offered from different suppliers. If a number of sellers have similar prices on the same product, but one supplier has a significantly lower price, this usually indicates that they have compromised on the quality of the product.

Buy From Suppliers That Have 95% and Higher Positive Feedback

A way to generally assess an AliExpress dropshipping supplier is through their positive feedback ratings. The rating systems for products and sellers are extremely important to every marketplace. Imagine you’re walking through a flea market, and someone shouts that the guy in next booth is a scammer. Would you buy from him? Probably not.

The same applies to the virtual AliExpress marketplace. Listen to what other merchants say about each supplier, and learn from that feedback. Essentially, look for the highest-rated suppliers in order to identify the most reliable ones.

Find the feedback ratings by navigating to a given supplier page on and clicking on the feedback tab. The scores listed here are broken down as follows. The Feedback Score indicates the seller’s sales volume, while Positive Feedback represents the feedback rate the supplier has received. When you’re sourcing products for your store, you should always aim for a 95% or higher in positive feedback and at least a 2,000 feedback score. Also, don’t forget to look at customer picture reviews.

Be Careful With Branded Products

Known luxury brands on are very rare. You can’t even search for Versace or Chanel products because these search keywords are blocked. If you notice a copyright infringement or a counterfeit item being sold on AliExpress, you should report it here. This could include items that are questionably similar in design to well-known brands or that include logos resembling those of more established ones.

However, it’s also important to note that not all branded products are fake. AliExpress often organises partnership promotions with brands such as Lenovo as well as others. Just remember to exercise caution, and use your best judgment on this in order to avoid any problems.

AliExpress dropshipping

Pay Attention to the Responsiveness of the Supplier

To test this, you can even make up an urgent issue and message a supplier about it to see how he or she responds. Things to take note of include the supplier’s response time and his or her command of English, along with the supplier’s ability to understand your problem and provide you with clear information. If he or she just responds with a generic, meaningless message, you can cross that supplier off your list.

After all, chances are good that at some point, you’ll have a real situation like the one you made up, and you’ll want to know your supplier will handle it correctly. When you’re trying to create a successful ecommerce business with AliExpress dropshipping, your suppliers are essential, so always choose wisely.

AliExpress dropshipping

Look for ePacket Delivery (The Aliexpress Premium Shipping Option)

The delivery time associated with AliExpress dropshipping is a sensitive topic, especially for new ecommerce entrepreneurs. It is true that this is a common hurdle that most dropshipping ecommerce entrepreneurs must figure out how to deal with. To do so, start by always keeping your eye out for AliExpress dropshipping suppliers that can offer the best delivery options possible for your ecommerce store.

As it is strikes the best balance between cheapness and speediness, ePacket, also known as AliExpress Premium Shipping, is ideal. With ePacket, delivery takes around 14 business days door-to-door and includes a tracking code, which your customers can use to check for the location of their order.

Pro Tip: Oberlo’s Free Chrome Extension offers a handy feature to identify products with the ePacket delivery option.

How to Dropship With Aliexpress: Order Samples

If you’re trying to achieve ecommerce success, then you may want to make sure that all of your products are as described online by ordering samples for yourself. While this may seem like a perfectly logical ideal, I don’t recommend doing it. If you’re importing 100+ products into your store it isn’t cost-effective to order each and every one of them to check for quality.

Instead, only order samples of products that you’re going to use in your advertising campaigns. Let’s say you have two or three items on which you are currently offering the best deals. You know they’re great, so you plan to use them in your Facebook or Instagram Ads to attract many visitors to your store. Order samples of these ones for sure. Savvy ecommerce entrepreneurs would order samples of these products to ensure that they are of the highest quality. If your top selling products are of great quality it will speak volumes about your store, and you’ll be more likely to gain some valuable social proof.

Since you’re only ordering a few items, pick the Express Delivery option and receive them within a few days.

How to Pick the Right Product to Sell

Picking the right products is a key aspect of understanding how to dropship with AliExpress. One article is definitely not enough to answer this question. Shopify went as far as writing an entire book about it. We also created this useful guide to selecting products for your dropshipping business to get you started.

In the midst of all these in-depth materials, however, my approach is very simple. I try to generate a huge list of product ideas and then cross out the ones that aren’t worth testing. Once that’s done, I’m left with a few winners to use in my ads, and then I add some other related products to my store to give it a large enough selection that it looks natural.

Generating Product Ideas

Here are the top three sources I consult for finding product ideas:

  • Whether or not you realize it, your mind is already filled with great product ideas. Think about your own hobbies, products you like, and the trends you observe around you. Take some time to brainstorm, and write down everything that you can think of. At this stage in the process don’t worry so much about whether you think a product will be a bestseller or not. Just add it to your list for now.
  • Also, be sure to check out other stores for inspiration. Glance through their offerings, best selling lists, and promoted products. The big online retail sites have tons of data to draw from, and they typically employ entire departments of people dedicated to picking their products and organizing sales. Use this information to your benefit as well. The following links are worth checking out on a regular basis: AliExpress Most Popular Products (Weekly), Amazon Best Sellers, Ebay Daily Deals, Lazada Top Sellers, LightInTheBox Top Sellers List.
  • Third, don’t underestimate the power of social shopping sites such Pinterest, Polyvore, Fancy, and Wanelo. These platforms feature hundreds of millions of different products. This might not be the first place you think to look for product ideas, but they are very valuable as social media in general becomes a more dynamic part of our lives. To get the most out of using these sites, create an account on each and subscribe to categories and lists of interest and keep an eye on trending product feeds. See if you can decide what people like the most and then add these items to your list.

Dropshipping Guide to Filtering Product Ideas

When you’re satisfied with the length of your product list, it’s time to refine it down so it only contains the very best ideas.

  • Look for niche products that are not as readily available on mainstream ecommerce sites or in stores. This will help ensure that you create a successful ecommerce business with products that actually in demand. For instance, even if there is no specific market to pinpoint for selling a regular belt, you can easily draw the conclusion that cycling gear will be of interest among cycling enthusiasts. Find your niche!
  • There are a few different product categories that have grown to large proportions in the few years. Odds are a mixture of large scale marketplaces and smaller shops have already seized the opportunity to sell these products. To avoid markets that are already saturated, cross off the following categories from your idea list: jewelry, books, clothing, and electronics. At this stage in the ecommerce game, you’ll need to be more specific in order to find a lucrative niche.
  • Now, let’s talk product pricing. In my experience, the sweet spot for a price is between $40 to $60 (with a 200% markup). I arrived at this price range based on the fact that the lower the price, the better the conversion rate. Simultaneously, the higher the price, the more customer support you will be expected to offer.
  • Scan through your product ideas and enter each one as well as variations on its name into the Google Keywords Analysis tool. Select ‘Keyword Ideas,’ and check how many searches each Low Competition Keyword receives. When using Google Adwords or search engine optimization (SEO), though I personally suggest advertising with Facebook and Instagram, avoid product categories that have little or no search traffic. The key is striking the right balance between keyword competition and search traffic.
  • Next, go to, search each of your product ideas, and look at the trends. Is the trend increasing or decreasing? Are there any other patterns worth noting? Where are the spikes occurring? Cross out products whose trends are fading as well as seasonal items.

After crossing off any ideas that don’t prove to be worth testing, you’ll be left with a few potential winners. Now it’s time to open a store, and try them out! We’re sure that you’ll find success, especially after reading our guide to AliExpress dropshipping.

MEGIR Watches

AliExpress dropshipping

A top watch brand available via AliExpress dropshipping offers affordable watches with a look of luxury, and they are well received all over the world. You can find a number of great reviews on Youtube and Instagram to prove the quality.

At this point, you now have the basics for understanding how to dropship with AliExpress, along with tried and true strategies for selecting products. This, however, isn’t the full story. There is one missing piece we have yet to consider.

The Key to Using AliExpress Successfully

I work at Oberlo, the company who created the aforementioned dropshipping automation app. Before launching Oberlo, my brother and I were running a standard dropshipping business and managed all our orders through email. Needless to say, it was tedious! Weary of communicating with dozens of different suppliers, we wondered why we didn’t just add products to our online store directly from the AliExpress marketplace. All the suppliers we were in contact with sold their products there anyway, and we could avoid all the hassle related to email communication, orders getting lost between Excel files, and not having any way of ensuring our suppliers would fulfill the orders.

So, we started adding items to our story directly from AliExpress and were immediately impressed with the results. We soon had 2–3 full-time employees manually placing orders on AliExpress, but even after making this change, things still didn’t feel quite as efficient as they could be. It was extremely time consuming, and we had problems with selling products that turned out to be out of stock.

My colleague was a developer, and we discussed how we could try building a tool to automate the AliExpress dropshipping method to eliminate some of the common errors and tedium associated with it. We had a working prototype within a few weeks of that discussion, and once we began using it, everything started falling into place.

Fast forward a few months, and we sold the successful ecommerce business to our partners in China, which left us with the tool that made the business possible. We launched it publicly in October, 2015 and now we call it Oberlo.

We’re extremely happy to have helped thousands of entrepreneurs sell over 2,000,000 products through AliExpress dropshipping since then.

That’s pretty much how AliExpress dropshipping got started. Oberlo is an invaluable partner in your ecommerce journey because it was built by people like you in order to power ecommerce businesses like yours.

If you plan on using AliExpress dropshipping as part of your business model, we strongly recommend giving Oberlo a try. The app helps you to add hundreds of products to your store, and ship your orders with just a few clicks. In addition, you can track your order delivery information with ease. On top of those great features you also get full support from our experienced customer success managers.

Why oberlo isn’t available for woocommerce?

  • mydogskips2 .

    Hopefully someone will address this.

I don’t know, maybe it’s just me, but I think most Americans believe they are exceptional, that they are superior to other people; we are arrogant, egotistical, and entitled, thinking we are the richest country and should have the best things.

I don’t believe Americans will buy cheap unbranded products, what they perceive as cheap, junk knockoffs that don’t have the “cred” of name brand items. And I don’t think most will be amenable to 14 day shipping periods. I bought something at the turn of the year from a major American online retailer, and it did take 14 days(slightly longer than usual) for my shipment to arrive, and I was very impatient and upset, even when my order did finally get to me. I gave serious consideration, on an almost daily basis, to calling up customer service to complain. To us Americans waiting two weeks for a G’damn shipment is freaking ridiculous. And I don’t think I’m unreasonable, nor do I think I’m atypical in holding such a belief; as I said, we’re entitled.

I say all this to say that I cannot see how AliExpress can work. Not that I spent all that much time there, but of the few items I thought looked interesting, something I’d consider buying for an online business, I thought they were priced too high to be able to sell at any kind of reasonable profit. Maybe I’m wrong, I am very cheap, but I would not buy the item if it were marked up to retail much higher than it was selling for on AliExpress. Even if I tripled the price(which to me would make buying it prohibitively expensive), after any paying the fees that I’d accrue as a seller I would not make an appreciable profit.

I’m sure others have made it work, I’m not disputing that, but personally I think it would be difficult to sell Americans cheap, unbranded knockoff crap made in China. As much as we’d like to say brands don’t matter, we know they do, they work on us subconsciously until we think about them and it influences our purchase decisions. If I’m going to buy a TV for example, I’m going to look for something like Samsung, Sony, LG, Sharp, Panasonic, Toshiba, even Vizio, Insignia or Hisense before I’d buy any brand I’ve never heard of which is probably made in China. The product itself may even be good, but perception matters and you have to slap a known and respected brand on it for most people to buy it. Yes, I know this is only one item which is not what one would want to sell, but I think it could be said to apply in general with few exceptions. For any category of items there are brand names that people are familiar and comfortable with which dominate the market.

    Well, you get my point.

  • Why sell to America?

  • Masood Khan

Not everybody can afford to buy branded items. Ali Express has done very well so far in American market. Going forward I am not so sure if Mr President slaps tariffs as he has promised.

  • Super great article and very helpful. Thanks

ok, I’m located in the Netherlands and today after 3 months working on building my store I have unlocked it to the world, So I wanted to test it before I publish it on the social network and on google ads, so I decided to purchase a test product from my store to get used to the whole procedure, after the customer set his order on my webstore and how to go from there with Oberlo, also to check the estimated shipping time to my home address , I made the order and then I checked the order on my account through Oberlo to proceed with the request from Aliexpress, but I was shocked with fact that as when I clicked on the “Order Product” I couldn’t order that product because the product can’t be shipped to the selected region (Netherlands!) ! I’m really shivering now because honestly that was not expected to happen on my first order(which is just a test order) on my store, I hope I can get an explanation for that and how to avoid that in the future specially my store is fully opened to the whole world ! if that product can’t be shipped to the Netherlands what will happen if someone from e.g. Kenya would ordere from my store!
One of the solution that Oberlo can work on is, if a seller runs into this issue, Oberlo can find an alternative supplier for the same product which can still ship that product to the destination of the customer , because I have done that manually and searched for same product by other suppliers and I found a lot of them but if I do that out side Oberlo I would loose the tracking of the product on Oberlo and that would be not efficient from the management prospective, Could Oberlo do that?

With dropshipping you don’t have an inventory.
You make a sale on your site and then you go to your suppliers website and buy it and then they ship it for you.
When people are saying that they are a dropshipper or say that they have a dropshopping business it mostly means that they use a dropshipping supplier.

Great post thank you!! Can you speak a little more about how you would do custom packaging for a product?

  • DebDijour

I see most items are “on sale” and the clock is ticking–do I ignore that sale price because it is not drop ship friendly? Put the expire date on my calendar and possibly be paying more than I am charging? This is all news to me.

Hate to be the one that breaks it to you, but a huge number of people are buying just that in stores everyday. But I am seeing a lot of items on EBay at the Ali Express asking price. So yep, not sure about how competitive it really is.

  • Gustavo Rodriguez-Aparicio

Hi, is there a way – between Shopify and Oberlo – to sell a “package” of goods, combining various items from many Aliexpress suppliers?

I don’t think Aliexpress provides a reliable business model. Here’s my experience with Aliexpress after becoming an A4 buyer within less than 6 months and after hundreds of orders. I had my account suspended then terminated 6 days ago. I contacted customer support 5 times to no avail. The first reason they gave me was: account temporarily suspended due to security reasons. After contacting the infamous customer support and promising to do their best, I got the second email with a new reason this time: My account is terminated due to violations of the order protection program. This happened and I’m an A4 buyer with 50 ongoing orders! Now I cannot dispute or leave feedback for any of them!! Simply thift!! Moreover, the fact that I returned the money to some of the sellers after a dispute/refund did not seem to matter at all. I did this voluntarily after receiving some of the disputed orders after some 3-4 months!! I still had respect and returned the money through another purchase and none of that mattered! I’m beginning to think that some of the highly rated/recommended sellers have close connections to AE management and are untouchable! I doubt their rating system so much after noticing that some of the most decent sellers are not highly rated at all.

The name “dropshipping” has been around for at least 30-40 years, since I first came to know of it. And most likely a lot longer than that. Do your research before making stupid statements that show your ignorance …

  • Hi there,

You can sell in any country in the world, regardless of where you reside. A lot of suppliers ship to hundreds of different countries including Nigeria.

    Good luck!

  • Hi there,

Oberlo works with Shopify platform only. Therefore, WordPress won’t be an option.

i want to start dropshipping business in india. The only thing that is bothering me is the custom duty on product. Is china post delivery service directly deliver the product on the mailing address or the customer need to go to the nearest post office to collect the parcel. It is very confusing and no one gives the information about custom charges.

  • Hey there,

These custom charges vary greatly among countries, so there is no specific answer here.

To verify the shipping policies associated with India you should reach out to a government representative or local authority.

    Good luck!

  • Sheikh Fahad

Hi, I want to know if it works for UAE market? who provides the delivery in UAE region like ali express or any other

  • Hey,

It does work in UAE. You can run a successful dropshipping business regardless of where you’re located.

Note, that using Oberlo you will be importing products from AliExpress or Oberlo Supply marketplace. Your supplier will handle the shipping for you.

    Hope this helps!

hi, i just want to strat dropshipping in dubai market, but right now i am in kenya , i have no idea how can i operate my store from keny for dubai customers please advice!

  • Sheikh Fahad Khalid

Hi Mate, thanks for the reply, just one more thing. So if i am located in UAE i can operate in any other market worldwide like South africa or Europe etc?

  • Hey there!

It does not matter where in the world you’re located. You can be based in one country and sell to any other country in the world. Simply tailor your marketing to Dubai market and set your shipping zones accordingly.

    Good luck!

  • Hey!

That’s right – you can be based in UAE and sell to any other market in the world 🙂

    Good luck!

Hello Thomas. I have been in shopify platform for three months. I have not sold one item. I am thinking about shutting down. this is my store:
Do you have any suggestions for me?

  • Smmoorr Alsukhni

    i have question
when i sell my product does it automatic buy them on aliexpress or what

  • Hey there Michael,

In terms of your store, you should check out this article and adjust your store based on the points given there:

You then need to focus on marketing. What was your advertising strategy?

  • Hey!

When a customer places an order on your store through your payment gateway (e.g. PayPal), you then need to use your credit card to purchase that product from your supplier. Oberlo is not capable of placing orders for you, I’m afraid.

  • Sunita Negi

Hi Michael, r u interested in selling your store… if yes, pls write to me at

  • Michael Orji

Hi Sunita, if the price is right, yes

Hi i am a newbie, i want to understand 2 things.
    1. Many drop shipping store offer worldwide shipping. If i want to do so, do i have to check with individual supplier if they ship world wide?
    2. How do i know which Aliexpress supplier is offering drop shipping? Do i need to check with them individually?

  • Hey!

We have a separate article on how to pick a product to sell online. Have a look:

    Hope this helps!

  • Hello,

    1. That’s right.
    2. No, you do not necessarily need to check with them individually. Most of AliExpress suppliers are happy with dropshippers. Plus, they might not even know that you’re drosphipping – you’ll be ordering their products as any other customer of theirs.

    Good luck!

  • sharif

    Hey Tomas,
Thanks for being there for many of us,
Since dropshipping has no borders, no limitations & all you need is a personal credit card, so do we, at any point of the process have to have a registered company of any type?

  • Okoye Godwin

thanks a lot sir, please what is the minimum amount needed to start a drop shipping business, and how do I deal with the high value of the dollar to the Nigerian naira, since its going to affect the cost of products I intend to sell?

  • Hans Hansson

    Hi Tomas

Is there a step by step guide you can pass on in regard to how to setup firstly shopify using aliexpress products. Basically a guide? Also have you heard of Fred Lam?

  • Hey!

Yes, you do. But only once you start getting sales. There’s no need to register a business entity prior that 🙂

  • Hi,

It won’t cost you anything to start a dropshipping business. When your Shopify free trial ends, you will need to subscribe to a paid plan, which will cost you $29 per month:

Note, that Oberlo Starter plan is forever free.

Regarding the currency rate: there’s no workaround for that, I’m afraid. Did you consider selling in other markets than Nigeria, for example the U.S.? This way you won’t have to worry about the currency rates.

  • Hey there,

    Sure thing:

Haven’t heard of Fred Lam. What about him?

  • Hans Hansson

No Nothing really he is trying to sell his program. I would like to know something. Is it possible to discuss something NOT in the forum.

  • Sure! Drop me a line at 😉

  • Sebastian Serafin

    Hey Thomas,
Great article, thank you so much for the useful information. I do have one concern with aliexpress dropshipping that I believe was not covered in your writing. Many of the items I have ordered before from aliexpress, alibaba and dhgate tend to come in abysmal packaging, and in most cases the item itself does not come in any form of a presentable box. Instead it is often wrapped in bubble-wrap or just put in a plastic bag. Is there any way to get suppliers to deliver individual items in a box of their own, and preferably one custom designed? Thank you.

  • Hey Sebastian!

You can arrange that with your supplier individually. But generally, there’s a little chance the supplier will be willing to provide a custom package, unless you’re a really big seller.

Anyhow, I haven’t heard customers complaining about the way the packages look. It’s what’s inside that matters after all 🙂

  • Bernadine

Hi Tomas – Great post and advice, thank you. I have recently opened an online store – some common advice I am getting from experts is that instead of having 480 products across my collections they want me to reduce them to only 50-70. I am not getting answers as to why that would be beneficial as I have 16 collections of men’s accessories and can’t for the life of me figure out why I would only have only 4 products for each category – this would be a lot easier to manage but not a great choice of selection for potential customers. Is this something you would recommend too or should I ignore this and continue with my collections as they are. I use Oberlo and have up to 500 products limit on my plan. Thanks.

  • Hey!

I wouldn’t recommend having that many products too.

How are you coping with the workload? As a one-person business, it may be hard to keep the track of stock and prices. Also, you need a large marketing budget to promote all these products. You also need to come up with a well-written product description, and doing that for couple of hundred products should be time consuming. Unless you have a Virtual Assistant. Do you have one?

  • Thanks for replying Tomas. I work full time on my site and did have a virtual assistant but he was not great, so I just do it all myself and I have great help from the Shopify team and I also have been allocated a dedicated google adwords specialist who has been wonderful and free. I use all the social media streams and SEO to advertise. I use a naming convention across all products and an ap for easier editing. So far I have had no trouble keeping up. I have a very small budget and stick to it. I understand so I will cull some products if I get too bogged down. I had the idea that more was better for customer choice. It’s been two weeks since launch – I think I got a bit excited. 😃

  • I see! Well, I’m glad it’s working for you 🙂

Keep us posted on your store’s progress!

Very good guide Tomas, i have a question, when a customer place an order in my store, i have to go to ali-express and buy it from there with my credit card, but do i receive the customers payment instantly or do i have to wait a certain amount of time?

  • Hi there Dave,

AliExpress support will be able to give you the best answer, I suggest you contact them:

    Good luck!

  • Thanks, man! Glad you found it helpful 🙂

There’s no specific answer on when you’ll receive customers payment, as it depends on your payment gateway. Could be a couple of days, could also happen instantly.

Hello, it was a Great Topic to Discuss and Thanks for the beautiful Insight Knowledge on the Topic.
I have just finished importing Products to my Shopify store using Oberlo. But a problem in setting up Shipping Address. I am in India and while using Indian address it shows that “This address will be used to calculate shipping rates.” Now as I am Dropshipping a product from China to USA where on AliExpress website it shows Free EPacket to USA .
Say for example a product cost $20 on my store and $10 on AliExpress and When shipping to USA using Epacket I should be making a profit of 10$ as per the website but as per Shopify My Store address which is in India will be used to calculate shipping cost (which I don’t know as It varies country to country and is very very very High) and not China to USA. Thus I will be making a zero or maybe paying from my pocket to ship. Kindly help me in this regard. What will be charged and how for shipping a product

  • Hey,

Once you receive the order, your customers shipping address (not yours) will be filled in automatically.

Unfortunately, Oberlo does not import shipping costs. We recommend incorporating your shipping costs into your prices to offer customers free shipping – that’s what most of dropshippers do.

    Good luck!

  • Lawrence Christopher Martinez

hi! this blog is super informative and on point! i just wonder what shall i do if ever a customer bought a product from me and the supplier has given them the wrong one or perhaps something that has defect on it. how’s the return process is going to be? i’m on the verge of starting my own online business using oberlo. and it can help me a lot if anyone can answer my question.

  • vera papadina

Hello Tomas and thank you for the marvellous help you are giving to us.I want to launch my shopify store next month using Oberlo.I would like to give my clients free shipping worldwide,it is only that I noticed for some countries, like Paraguay and others, you have to pay, even if the same item for the rest of the countries is shipped for free .I mean that if i ship a coat X to USA ,aliexpress ships it for me for free, but if the same coat X I sent it to Paraguay,or Georgia for example, there is an extra fee(most of the times is about 10 to 15 $,or even more). How can I overcome this obstacle and still offer free shipping worldwide?Should I tell that I ship worldwide for free but these countries should pay an extra fee?Do you see any other solution?Your answer would be of great assistance to me.
    Best regards

  • Hey Lawrence,

Our Help Center has an article on how to deal with returns and refunds, have a look: Hope this helps!

Glad you enjoyed the article! 🙂

  • Hi there Vera,

You can make free shipping, but exclude these countries and set the shipping rates for them accordingly. Or, you can put a higher mark up on your prices, so the shipping fees are covered in the retail price and then offer free shipping worldwide.

What do you think would work better for your store?

  • vera papadina

Hi there Thomas, thank you very much for your quick responce!
Well,I am thinking that maybe is best include the extra shipping fees in my retail price and offer free shipping to everybody. I think that free shipping worldwide appeals very much to the clients and attracts them. What is your opinion? You have been of great help!Best of luck about everything

  • Carl

    Hi Tomas!
I plan to start a shopify dropshipping business from sweden but mainly target the american market but I am a little confused about a few things. Neither me or my supplier will have nexus in the USA, will I still need to collect sales tax and report it to the different states my customers are based in? Also will I have to register a business to run this, or would it be an advantage in any way? And in addition how will it work with customs taxes when the products get imported, can I avoid this by for exapmle have my suppliers send the products as “gifts”?
    Many thanks in advance!

  • Agree with you. Free shipping is our recommended approach 🙂 Also, customers are less sensitive to delivery times when offered free shipping.

    Best of luck, Vera!

  • Hey Carl,

We get this asked a lot. However there’s no specific answer, as laws differ among countries. I recommend reaching out to your local authorities or government representative for the best piece of advise regarding taxes.

You will need to register a business entity once you start making sales only. For details, again, seek advise from your local authorities.

    Good luck, buddy!

  • vera papadina

You are absolutely right.Thank you again for your precious advices and your wishes!

Great and informative article, thank you! I have a question regarding the option of searching a picture on Aliexpress. If soneone sees a picture of what I’m selling from Aliexpress, how do I prevent them from just screenshotting the image and finding it and ordering it themselves on Ali’s website?
    Thank you!

  • Hi there Ann,

Make sure the pictures you use do not have any logos/watermarks on them. Alternatively, you can send a sample to yourself and take a few pictures yourself – that’d be ideal. Would you be willing to do that?

Glad you enjoyed the article, by the way!

  • The Niche4U

    Hello Mr. Slimas,
Can and will you recommend a drop-shipping company that does not utilize a supplier in china or another nefarious country that has strained political issues with America. It is not personal towards any weaker nation compared to America, it is business, it is Capitalism. My company will remain small and provide services to those only in America and Canada. For example, Sunrise Wholesale Merchandise appears legitimate. What do you think, Sir?

  • Hey there, Arunas! Why would you limit yourself to one market only? I suggest going international, as Lithuanian market might be too small indeed.

    Good luck!

  • Hello there. Did you previously have any issues with ordering products from Chinese suppliers? Lots of dropshippers sell products from Chinese suppliers to American customers and I never heard any problems connected with the relationship of the two countries.

Anyhow, Oberlo Supply marketplace offers products from several different countries. You can give them a try:

    Good luck!

Hi! I spoke to a supplier who has agreed to arrange cheaper and faster
shipping outside of their standardized Aliexpress shipping options . Is
there a way that I can take advantage of this discounted fee without
placing the order manually with my supplier?

  • Hey,

Not sure where you’re located, but you can check what payment gateways are available in your country here: I hope you’ll find a working alternative!

    Let me know!

  • Hey there,

I’m not entirely sure how this will work. In what form does the supplier offer you a discount? Is it a discount code? Or is it an URL to a discounted shipping page?

Get back to me with more details and I’ll do my best to advise you.

  • Soonesprit Abderrazzaq

    Thank you for your reply
the problem is that i don’t use Shopify, i have a store created with woocommerce and wordpress,is that shopify offer any subscription to alternative service payment gateway

  • Thanks for the clarification! In this case, you need to contact WooCommerce support.

Note, that you won’t be able to use Oberlo on WooCommerce, as it’s available to Shopify only.

  • Wisdom Mabuza

    Hi Thomas,

It is through a discount code,

  • Gotcha. Then you can use Oberlo as usual – you will not need to place orders manually.

The only thing you’ll need to do is to type in your discount code at AliExpress checkout page before clicking “Confirm & Pay”.

    Good luck!

  • Wisdom Mabuza

I see, thanks for the feedback.

  • Anders Sim

hi, if i order the items on aliexpress for the customer that ordered through my site, does it mean that i pay with my card or the customer’s card details on the aliexpress checkout? i never understood how we actually order for the customer without showing them the real price of the items etc

  • Hey, Anders,

To answer your question, let me quickly explain how dropshipping with Oberlo app works:
A customer places an order in your Shopify store and you receive money to your payment gateway account (PayPal for example). Then, you have to use your personal credit card and purchase an item for your customer from the supplier, to be shipped directly to your customer.

Your profit will be the difference between the amount of money a customer paid in your Shopify store and the cost of the product you paid for the supplier.

To find out more, have a look at our beginner’s guide here:

    Does that make sense?

  • khalid

So I have to order the products manually at the supplier? Can this be automated?

  • That’s right.

I’m afraid, the process cannot be automated, simply because we cannot take responsibility of handling our users’ orders on their behalf. As a business owner, you’re responsible for a decision making process.

    Hope this makes sense!

Are in aliexpress lower prices for wholesale or you just buy at the current prices and resell higher?
As far I learned it is :
Aliexpress – like ebay and amazon, anyone can buy, not just for reselling but for personal use.
Alibaba – for resellers and they require to order quantities.

  • Epifanio

AliExpress is just a huge retail online marketplace, like Amazon, Ebay, etc., as you said. In fact, you can find most of the sellers on AliExpress are also on Amazon, Ebay etc. so you can do the same thing with Ebay, Amazon, etc.

With AliExpress you are not doing “dropshipping” really, just “buy low resell high”. This is also called “arbitrage” in economics parlance. In a real dropshipping model the suppliers do not compete against you by selling their products on the retail market, and you must be a business to buy from them. If you are old enough and not new to e-commerce you will find it’s the same thing people were doing when Amazon first launched and was not so popular as it is today and their prices were lower than market’s average.

If you want to buy at real wholesale prices (or better, at factory prices) then Alibaba is one option. But it generally requires buying in bulk.

  • Epifanio

This is not Nobody cares about the strained political issues your country has around the world. So keep your rants elsewhere and be nice.

  • Epifanio

    Well written article.

Anyways when you write “AliExpress premium shipping known as ePacket” it sounds ambiguous. If you referred to AliExpress’ Premium Shipping method and meant that they are equivalent, it’s incorrect. If you meant that ePacket is a premium shipping method, that’s also incorrect because AliExpress Premium Shipping is actually a real premium shipping service.

Also the buy from amazon sell on ebay arbitrage, where you earn around 1$ per sale…

    Nice nane

    Hey Tomas,
    Great article.
The Product I want to import from aliexpress is being sold at specific times a day.
At the other times it is showing “product not available”.
Is It possible to sell the product even though it is showing “product not available” in aliexpress site?

  • Hey there, Deborah,

Shipping policies often dictate that the customer is responsible for paying customs fees associated with the delivery. However, the laws differ among countries, therefore there’s no specific answer here. To be 100% sure about the shipping policies associated with a given location, you should reach out to a government representative or local authority.

    Good luck!

  • Hello there,

I’ve never seen any suppliers that would sell only at specific times a day. Could you share a link of that product?

  • Hi, Ashish,

You will need to register a business entity and pay corresponding taxes once you start making sales. For more details, you should contact a local government representative.

  • or kramer
  • That’s very odd! You won’t be able to buy an item from AliExpress when it shows “item is no longer available”.

Therefore, I’d recommend you to look for an alternative supplier and switch 🙂

  • Hey,

RIght, that does sound confusing. I’ll make sure to fix that.

Thanks a lot for your feedback!

  • or kramer

The only supplier that is not doing this is from dhgate.

But Oberlo does not support dhgate, right?
Can you add a feature to get the order and transfer it when the item is available?

  • Harry Parker

It really depends on your business and the product you’re selling. As always, its best to do some research on your own. I’ve found that by simply giving a potential dropshipper a call and doing some negotiation, they’ll be much more lenient and sometimes won’t require a minimum order size.

    HI Tomas
I live in Dubai / UAE, to start a drop shipping business, do I have to take ecommerce license from UAE government ??

  • Hi, Jostin!

You should incorporate your business when you start generating income. Every single country has different laws and you should just reach out to a government’s representative or any other local authority for a better advice.

  • Hey, Mykel!

This depends on your shipping settings in Shopify admin. You can set price based shipping rates, so if the customer adds two products to the shopping cart, they will need to pay a bigger shipping fee.

Hi! I live in Canada and know we have strict labelling requirements for products sold here. For example, the sellers company name and country it was made in must be on the label, in BOTH english and French. Do you know how others selling to Canada have delt with this using the Shopify-Oberlo-Aliexpress model your proposing here? Thanks for the great article!

  • Hey, Fadi!

To avoid running into issues you should do your best not to sell both original and fake products associated with well-known brands, as these are usually license restricted.

If you have more questions, just let me know!

  • Hi, Jolene!

We haven’t heard from our users about the problems like this one. Also, the suppliers do not offer custom labelling on their products, and this didn’t cause any issues to the users, who are selling to Canada.

Drop us a line at if you have more questions!
    Otherwise, happy dropshipping!

Nice article !! I just started creating my store. Added paypal express as payment gateway but having trouble accepting credit cards as i am not living in the US. 2checkout/stripe wont work for me ,,, and thought about skrill/moneybookers but they need registered business. i had no idea that you must register to make it work. i thought these things would be effortless and main thing to worry about for me will be advertising, choosing right niche and product research. the only solution i got is to link paypal and skrill/moneybookers accounts to payoneer. But i don’t know how to register drop shipping business. Even i am not sure it is going to work and do you guys pay from your own pockets for first sales or you wait till you receive payments ? And i wanted to know that how oberlo operates for automation ? i mean does it place orders on aliexpress automatically once someone purchases through your store or it waits till you receive payments ? 😅

  • Jolene

Thanks Tomas! Maybe it’s just if the product is sold domestically as I can’t find anyone else worried about this issue either. Great article btw!

hey, so normally without oberlo i would have to buy the product from my supplier after my customer bought it, but does oberlo do that for me?

  • Hi, there!

Oberlo helps to automate the ordering process, however you will still need to click on several buttons to purchase products from the supplier.

You can see how the process looks like here:

Hi, I reside in Delhi , India, I just got my store active , trying to make it online asap.
I am facing a problem while selecting products through Oberlo from AliExpress. While I select the product with price in dollars , I need them to sell in rupees. How can I convert these to rupees. Please help.

  • Suriya Kumar

You have an option to markup the price by multiplier. Assume 1USD = 65INR, you have to enter your multiplier as (65+profit margin) and apply to all the products.

  • or kramer

    Hi Tomas,
I tried to import the product when the store is selling and it works 🙂
I can also sell the item when the aliexpress store is not selling.
    So its all good !
I just need to make sure to buy the item from oberlo system in the active working hours of the shop.

  • David_Johnson

I am interested in doing this dropshipping + oberlo.

    My real questions are :

Is this legal at all? Can I be sued from aliexpress or something? I tried and failed to find a way to contact them directly thats why I am asking it here. I do understand that many people do this – but is it REALLY legal in case that my store grow real big and becomes even my main business?

Does aliexpress allow these kind of things – that we can buy an item (ship to the buyer address) and we charge our buyer with other goods/money , usually higher ofc???

Do I need to start the business before I get into this drop shipping thing? I see many people that tell me that it ain’t important.

I just want to make sure that all of this is allowed by aliexpress so that I can do drop shipping freely without any fear of my business being charged in the future.

Or if any of you know the email on where I can send them all my questions regarding drop shipping my self, rather than just asking people that do not work with them. As I stated I was unable to find email to which I could contact them.

Please answer me ASAP, I really aprechiate if and what you send me as an reply.

    God bless you all.

  • aakash singh

Look, 3 countries are involved here. As far as the local tax implications are concerned all you need to worry about is paying the income tax. The supplier will take care of the tax implications in China. Now the only problem is the import duty/customs duty in the importing country, but my best guess is that you again don’t have to worry about that.

  • Best article. No doughy Shopify and oberlo is best for drop shipping.I am in this business for quiet long .
    Some of My personal tips
    1) Every new beginner should be patience with their success it is not one day game. people who are earning are for quiet long in this business
    2) Niche and Product research is important. Now you have to be niche specific to get success or follow my rule first make a general store then when you get sales on one specific products then make it your niche.

I’m confused with one thing. I’ve read that if ever I would make a sale of my products on shopify, shopify and paypal would hold my funds for the security of the customer. But then I saw here that once a customer orders from me, oberlo would automatically ship the item. So do I still have to buy it to the supplier manually or oberlo would do it for me? How could I pay the supplier if my funds are on hold? If I ever pay using card, then it isn’t $0 capital anymore. I’m really confused about this. I want to start this dropshipping business but I am so broke I don’t know how to start.

  • Hey, David,

It is legal as long as you register a business entity and pay corresponding taxes. You’ll need to register your business when you start making sales.

AliExpress suppliers don’t mind that you’re dropshipping. In the eyes of the supplier, you’re just a regular customer 🙂 Go ahead and start doing business!

  • Hey,

You do not need to contact AliExpress. Having an AliExpress account and Oberlo Chrome extension is sufficient to start importing products from the suppliers. If you’re not sure how importing process works, have a look at our Help Center article:

    Good luck!

  • Hey!

Thanks for sharing your tips! Spot on advice 🙂

  • Hello, Kristine,

Oberlo will not automatically ship the item. Once you receive an order on your store, you’ll then need to purchase that product from the supplier. Only then the item will be shipped (by the supplier).

In the beginning of the business, you’ll need to have a small working capital reserve on your credit card to be able to place new orders for your customers. But don’t worry, once you start to build up a bigger revenue reserve from your sales, you will be able to employ it without having to use your personal funds.

    Hope that helps!

Thank you for all the great free advice you kindly gave us. I simply wanted to know your opinion on one matter which is:
What do you think about letting the supplier know that you do dropshipping and maybe try to get some kind of a special deal, or do you think it’s a better idea to just behave as a common customer?
    Thank you in advance,

  • Hey Siniša,

You can definitely get in touch with the supplier and try to negotiate a special deal. There’s no guarantee they will agree on that, but you can give it a try!

Let us know how it goes!

You are thinking of goods sold in retail outlets- stuff shipped in from overseas doesn’t count- the logistics would be impossible!!

First of all, why would suppliers care if you have given money to you local state to set up an official business? They don’t. They are NEVER going to send you a message that says, “Hey. Did you go online to Colorado’s Secretary of State’s website? Because we really care that you give them money.”

I mean, it doesn’t benefit them AT ALL so why would they care? Hell, they don’t don’t even communicate in English, so why would they be browsing online for American state-owned websites for establishing official businesses? It has NO benefit to to their company. All they care is that you give them money in exchange for their products.

I have been buying from China (directly) since 2015 and how many suppliers have asked me about my taxes/personal information? ZERO!

How many times did you stuff the phrase “AliExpress dropshipping” into this article? Ridiculous.

Most people stopped keyword stuffing 5 years ago. Write for us readers, not for search engines.

I was all set to use Oberlo, but this has totally put me off. I’ll be looking for an alternative solution instead.
